Manxman Rob Fagg is looking forward to this weeks Microgaming backed Rally Isle of Man as he contests the DUKE Stages section of the event alongside 17 year old British Rally Championship regular Arron Newby from Carnforth. Although this year does not see the BRC present, the event will form a round of the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship in which he is eligible for points.

The event sees a return to the TEG Sport team for Rob following spells in 2007 and last year, which along with the return of the event following last years cancellation brings strong praise from the Kirk Michael resident.

“It’s great to have the opportunity to work again with TEG Sport, they have proven they are a top team following three years of running the Pirelli Star Driver car in the BRC, winning the British title with Keith Cronin as well as the team championship. Add to that being in contention for two years running top British driver Mark Higgins and it is clear to see how professional they are” commented Rob earlier this week, “It is equally as pleasing to see Rally Isle of Man return in 2012 following last years cancellation. The team have come back stronger with new initiatives and have been rewarded with a strong entry of 70+ cars, well done to them.”

For Newby and Robert Graham & Co Quantity Surveyors sponsored Fagg, it will be the first time they have teamed up and it will be the first time for Newby in his Pirelli backed Subaru Impreza N11, the same car driven to event glory in 2008 and 2009 by Manxman Higgins, on a closed round tarmac event. Arron though is no stranger to the Manx roads having contested the Manx National back in May in his Skoda Fabia R2, achieving a fantastic 10th Overall.

The event offers crews two days to complete a recce of the stages, some of the best tarmac stages in Europe, and prepare the pace notes which they will commit to during the event. This time will be vital to Arron and Rob to build up a relationship ahead of the start on Thursday but this is not something that will faze either of the pairing.

“Although we have not competed together before, I have known Arron from my previous spells with the team and last year he worked on the Fiesta ST I competed in with Nick Cristafaro within the team,” explained Fagg, “He has done a lot of rallying this year, a year which is all about learning and has used different co-drivers which will all be a benefit as we prepare for this event.”

As well as drive, Newby also works for the family owned TEG Sport team and that work sees him assist in the preparation of the cars, a role that will ultimately benefit him as he gains more knowledge.

The event is run over three days with Thursday being the shortest with four stages, two of those a new Super Special taking place in the heart of the islands capital, on Douglas promenade. Two shorts test will fit in the middle of these runs before an overnight halt greets the crews.

Friday offers the crews a further 12 stages covering 84 miles over more of the classic Manx Stages, with those stages at the end of the day being in the dusk to darkness conditions – another test for the crews. Saturday is the longest of the event at 89 miles spread across 10 stages, will climax with the renowned run over Druidale, down Injerbrek, through the Baldwins to the Ballaoates hairpin before the run up to join the famous TT Course for the run to the finish at the TT Grandstand, a stage all crews look forward to and finishing is a reward in it’s self.
