Isle of Man based Rally Co-driver Rob Fagg heads
across the Irish Sea once again this weekend, but
this time to Ireland and not the UK, where he will
contest the Monaghan Stages on Sunday.
Backed once again in 2011 by Robert Graham & Co
Quantity Surveyors, he will team up with John Stone
in his CA1 Sport prepared and run Skoda Fabia WRC.
This will be only the pair’s second event together,
the first being back in February when they teamed up
to contest the Chris Kelly Memorial Stages on the
Isle of Man. It was an event they would eventually
take third place on, following a fraught opening leg
which almost claimed the crew as early as the third
stage as they battled the islands unpredictable
weather conditions.
Stone’s main aim for the event is to get further
mileage under his belt ahead of the second round of
the REIS MSA Asphalt Championship which he is
contesting this year, an event which also takes
place on the Isle of Man in early May.
Stone’s usual co-driver for that series, the
experienced Patrick Walsh, was unable to commit to
the trip to Monaghan, allowing for Stone to call
upon the service of Cannon Tech (Scotland) supported
Fagg. The opportunity to compete with Stone again in
the Legends Fires-backed Fabia was one Rob was keen
not to pass on.
“John called me up and asked if I would be free to
do the event and a quick check of the calendar
showed I had no commitments that weekend so it was
an easy response” commented Rob, “John and I got on
well in and out of the car back in February, the CA1
Sport team are easy to work with and the Skoda is a
fantastic car to sit in so I am very much looking
forward to the weekend.”
The event may not be until Sunday, but it’s a Friday
rendezvous for Rob and John in Dublin, heading on
to Monaghan in good time for
the important stage reconnaissance the following
day. Although the event may only consist of three
stages, which the crews will tackle three times
each, they do total 57km (36miles) per loop. The
recce period will allow John and Rob to work
together to produce the pace notes they will commit
to during Sunday.
Such is the high standard of the 140 car entry; John
and Rob are seeded at number 25, just one ahead of
MSA Asphalt Championship rivals Mark Jasper and Don
Wyatt. That pairing are using the event for the same
purpose as Stone in their Hyundai Accent WRC.
Leading the crews away will be Niall Mcguire/Edna
Sherry in the first of three Subaru Impreza WRCs at
the head of the field. At number two is current
Irish Tarmac Championship leader Tim McNulty/Paul
Kiely followed by Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally.
Former multiple Irish Tarmac Champion Derek
McGarrity was due to start at four but he has
subsequently withdrawn, while Robert Barrable faces
a race against time to get the engine back for his
Skoda S2000.
Proceedings will get under way from the Hillgrove
Hotel in Monaghan at 9.10 with crews due back in
service from the first loop around noon. They will
then head back out for the second run before
retuning approximately 15.00 after which they will
tackle the final loop reaching the finish just
before 18.00 back at the Hillgrove Hotel. Progress
of the event can be followed at

This weekend marks the start of a busy few weeks for
Rob who will contest three events in the next four
weeks. Following this weekend he will enjoy a
weekend away from the stages before heading to
Carlisle to contest the Pirelli International Rally
on April 29th – 30th when he
and Nick Cristofaro will continue there Dulux Trade
MSA British Rally Championship campaign in the Ford
Fiesta ST. Next up the weekend after is Rob’s home
round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Championship, the Manx
Telecom Rally, an event he will contest with Stephen
Simpson in his Subaru Impreza S12.
Rob is supported in 2011 by Cannon Tech.
